Il Signore degli Anelli (titolo originale in inglese: The Lord of the Rings) è un romanzo epico fantasy scritto da John Ronald Reuel Tolkien e ambientato alla fine della Terza Era, nell'immaginaria Terra di Mezzo.
Il romanzo è ambientato in un universo immaginario (Arda), e in un tempo immaginario (la Terza Era della Terra di Mezzo). Riguardo a questo mondo "altro", informazioni ci vengono fornite per tutto il corso della vicenda, ma sono soprattutto le appendici del libro e l'opera postuma Il Silmarillion a descrivere dettagliatamente la storia, gli usi e i linguaggi di queste civiltà.Ne Il Silmarillion, in particolare, viene narrata l'origine di Sauron al servizio di Melkor, creatore del male assoluto, e della guerra scatenata contro quest'ultimo dalle potenze angeliche del mondo, i Valar, che alla fine della Prima Era lo sconfissero e lo rinchiusero nel Vuoto oltre il tempo e lo spazio.
